The Volkswagen Transporter is now in its fifth generation, and this latest version is even better to drive and cheaper to run than ever, as we find out in this video review.

It comes in two body lengths and three roof heights, and all Transporters come with a handy side door that opens wide enough to fit a euro pallet through.

Optional extras include rails to secure loads to, a rubberised floor mat which provides grip, and you can either stick with the standard van doors or you can have an optional lift up tailgate.

The Transporter has a load bay volume of 5.8 cubic meters to 9.3 cubic matters, and payloads range from 740 to 1340 kilograms. All Transporters come with a 2.0-litre diesel engine, and you can now get a wide variety of power output ranging from 84bhp to 180bhp in the bi-turbo model. The Blue Motion version, Volkswagen claims, can return 44.8mpg and emits just 116g/km of CO2.

Overall, we think the Volkswagen Transporter is an extremely well-built van; many go on to cover huge mileages and resale values are high, too. It’s easy to drive, cheap to run, and there’s an option of four-wheel drive. But, it’s expensive to buy, you can’t get secondary wide-angle mirrors and the lack of a full-length bulkhead really is an issue. Watch the video review to find out more.
